Franz Kafka's use of symbolism in Metamorphoses helps the audience grasp an appreciation of Gregor's drive towards humanity and independence. The transformation in this book is used as a symbol of Gregor's metamorphosis into humanity. While none of us should ever wake up and experience the thrill of turning into a giant insect, the discomfort Gregor felt is an example that is relevant to us in several ways. Throughout history we see numerous symbols that show the ultimate symbol of humanity and independence. The story begins with Gregor Samsa waking up as an insect. As the story progresses, Gregor accepts that he is an insect and never questions why or how this transformation can occur. His only concern is going to work. The fact that Gregor is not worried about his new condition makes the audience wonder whether or not he has changed physically. The family Gregor lived in had complications. Before Gregor's transformation, he lived a rather dark life, comparable to that of an insect. He was consumed with his work to provide and support his family. He had no other friends and, other than his sister, had poor communication with his parents. This symbolizes his state of being. Gregor didn't wake up and turn into an insect. He finally realized that he had been an insect for quite some time. Gregor's life was in many ways similar to that of an insect. Gregor was the worker of the family. It was the only source of income. Many insects, such as bees, have workers who deliver for the group. Gregor provided for and provided for all members of his family, as a bee provides for its hive. Gregor gave up all the exciting parts of life and only wanted to work. Just like a… middle of paper… easily finds a job and they start communicating better after he leaves. It seemed that Gregor had held them back. Through his metamorphosis into an insect, Gregor was transforming into something more than a human being. The insect that Gregor turns into is not a symbol of inhumanity. You might think otherwise, but he was gaining humanity as he became more and more of an insect. Bugs, insects and harmless living beings struggling for nothing are humanity. The real Gregor died as soon as he let his work consume him and sequester him from his family and the way they saw him. Gregor wakes up to understand who he really is, but he can't even identify himself. The true metamorphosis had already been underway for many years. Overall, Gregor's transformation into an insect exemplifies the unpleasant life he was living, and his metamorphosis symbolizes a slow transformation towards his own humanity..
