Topic > My experience at Sinai Plaza and HYCCF - 1032

It was my first time working with the elderly, it was quite interesting. However, I have experienced cognitive dissonance many times; I found myself performing actions that I was told to do that did not conform to my cognition. According to Aronson, “Festinger's theory is more than just a theory about coherence. It is essentially a theory of sensemaking: how people make sense of their beliefs, their environment, and their behavior” (1997). In relation to my experience, an elderly woman dropped her shoe and was desperate to have her shoe put back on. One of the supervisors looked at me and shook his head as if to warn me not to try to put his shoe back on. I attempted to internally justify the behavior by suggesting that the supervisor knows better, even though it was obvious that there was not enough external justification, thus creating insufficient justification (Myers & Twenge, 2013). In the end, however, I gave in and finally put on that poor woman's shoe. I felt she had the right to put her shoe back on even if it fell off her feet. Therefore I failed to conform, yet I experienced the phenomenon of obedience for a brief moment. According to Myers and Twenge, there is a difference between conformity and obedience. For example, conformity is “a change in behavior or beliefs as a result of real or imagined group pressure; obedience is “acting in accordance with a direct order or command” (2013). So, my belief was not affected because I still firmly believed that the woman had the absolute right to put her shoe back on. According to Ruvulo and Markus, “Possible selves are elements of the self-concept that represent what individuals could become, I like to become, but I'm afraid of being...... middle of paper ......I'd like to work in the future; for example, I see myself working with the elderly rather than children because when I was completing my service learning hours at Sinai Plaza, I felt it was exciting and extremely fulfilling. The experience and memories I gained from both locations made this assignment much more meaningful than I expected. Through the process of fulfilling my duties, I learned about collectivism, in such an individualistic society. I learned that for a society to be successful it is necessary to have a collectivist vision, in which “you give priority to the goals of your group” (Myers & Twenge, 2013). Furthermore, I also learned about my interdependent self, in which “I constructed my identity in relation to others” (Myers & Twenge, 2013). For example, I played the role of daughter, granddaughter, friend and mother.
