Film Analysis of Order and ChaosHollywood Old and NewYork UniversityFILM 1701Herman Chi Hung Yu211501715Tutorial 4Films of Hollywood genres express elements of "order" and "chaos" using different cinematic elements in movies. The films that will be analyzed are a pair of film noirs, The Big Sleep (1946) and Polanski's Chinatown (1974). The way films portray the elements of order and chaos is primarily through characters. The way the characters are portrayed in the film gives the audience clues as to which characters represent which side. Other elements such as narrative elements, lighting and camera angles were used to further emphasize that something good or bad is happening or about to happen. Characters are usually the most obvious element in a film that can help express order and chaos. Starting from the main character, Jake Gittes, from the movie Chinatown, it is obvious that this character will represent order. The main goal this character wants to achieve is justice, as he hates the way crimes are left alone. The way the narrative structure is set up in this film shows that he is that type of character; as he works hard to help and overcomes many obstacles without giving up. The structure serves to develop his personality because he is constantly trying to connect clues but since Evelyn, the female protagonist, does not let out all the important information, it makes him even more eager to solve. The character who will represent the chaos will be Noah Cross. The way he is portrayed at the beginning of the film shows that he is a well-rounded character. He seems friendly but deep down he is evil. Even when Gittes questioned Cross and revealed his evidence, Cross answered questions calmly... middle of paper... conversation with Vivian, where she would give him more information, would always lead to him. wondering about her. An example in the film is that, at the restaurant, just before the casino scene, Marlowe asks, “Why does it bother you so much? What's wrong with Eddie Mars?” (Hawk, 1946) and becomes silent and expressionless, this shows that she is definitely hiding something that is causing chaos for Marlowe. This is a mess much like Chinatown. In conclusion, both films reveal a lot of content that arose in order and chaos using the main elements of the film. Through the analysis of the film it was revealed which characters represented which part and also the formal elements that helped guide the process towards its conclusion.
