Topic > Benefits of Service Animals - 1860

Animals are very similar to humans in that they offer constant love and loyalty. For some, animals are something they can rely on in everyday life. Service animals make simple tasks like walking, seeing, and even being emotionally stable manageable. People who desperately need a service animal should have the right to be with their service companion while they protect and serve their handler. Service animals should be allowed in all public places because they provide life-saving services, and therefore there should be no restrictions on service animals wherever they go. A service animal is not only subject to dogs, but there are a variety of different types of service animals, they are competent to serve or do certain "Individuals with disabilities [should be able to] bring their service animals in all areas of public facilities and private businesses [whether it is an emotional service dog or a physical service dog,] but if a service dog is unable to [be controlled] it may be [ostracized ] from a facility if its presence interferes with the facility's legitimate safety requirements” (“Service Animals”), their duty is to help and assist those who are disabled, not to make their lives worse. According to Service Dogs of America, service dogs now assist their handlers who have limited mobility in the home (“The Various”). With state laws they are very explicit in what they seek to endorse that in Washington State the term service animal is seen as an animal that is adequately trained to access and accommodate a person's sensory, mental, or physical disability (1210). In many states they specify what certain service animals do and what they are capable of so that when those who need a service animal know the laws where they live and specify what type of animal assistance is needed. Foreman indicates that service dogs were accepted into a program called the Prison PUP Program. For the past 12 years the program has been operated in penitentiaries throughout New England (61). What this program allows inmates is to socialize and train their dogs; take responsibility for violation of home, care and grooming (61). So, since inmates have so much time on their hands, the prison wants them to put their energy into something good, so it organizes classes for inmates so they can learn all the ins and outs of training a service animal, and why The inmates get keeping the dog in the room creates a greater bond
