Hinduism and Buddhism are two of the most interesting religions in the world. To this day, people still practice these religions in various parts of the world. Although they are from India, some have difficulty distinguishing between the two. While Hinduism and Buddhism share many similarities, they are also different. What is Hinduism? Hinduism, the largest of the Eastern religions and one of the oldest in the world. (Curry). Hinduism denotes the religions of the majority of people in India and Nepal, and some communities in other continents, who call themselves Hindus. (Flood). It is said to have existed from 1500 to 300 BC What is Buddhism? Many say that Buddhism is a child of Hinduism. However, Buddhism formed in the 5th century BC is a religion originating from northern India, its uniqueness also derives from the Buddha Siddhartha Gautama (563-483 BC). Some of his teachings included: The Four Noble Truths, The Way of Inquiry, and the Illusion of the Soul. It consists of three branches: Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana. Certainly, there are many similarities between them, some of which concern their belief in karma and reincarnation, their origin and emphasis on compassion and nonviolence towards human beings. Karma can be understood as the actions performed by people, in relation to their life cycle. It is important for both religions because it is a goal to be achieved. Reincarnation is the process of reliving in another soul or body. In other words, death is not the end. Reincarnation allows karma to work. When reincarnation is successful, it allows each soul a different experience, a new beginning, and self-realization. Although originating from India, Hinduism and Buddhism have similarities and differences, however this does not stop them from being unique. I think Hinduism suits me best because Buddhists follow the actions and teachings of one man, Buddha, and Hinduism seems to be the easiest religion to follow. Works Cited Adler, Phillip J.
