Louis Armstrong is a very popular jazz artist, cornetist and trumpeter of the early and mid 1900s. Some of Mr. Armstrong's most popular songs were "What a Wonderful World", "Mack the Knife" and "Hello Dolly". He won a few awards throughout his life, including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a Grammy Award for Male Vocal Performance. Louis Armstrong died in 1971, but after his death he released several songs and won some awards. Louis Armstrong was born to William and May-Ann Armstrong, August 4, 1901; although he is said to have been born on July 4, 1900. He was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, where he went back and forth between his grandmother's house and his mother's house. He had a sister named Beatrice, just two years younger than him, who he took care of as a child. At the age of seven he began singing on the streets with his friends for little money and from there he took the nickname "Satchelmouth" which was later changed to "Satchmo" because of his smile. While busking he met a trumpet player named Bunk Johnson who taught him things he knew about music and the trumpet. In his memoirs he said: "But somehow all that jive didn't faze me at all, I was so happy to have a place to toot my horn" (Armstrong). Trouble did not encounter Mr. Armstrong until 1912 during a New Year's Eve celebration. Louis Armstrong fired a gun into the air and was immediately arrested and spent the night in a prison cell. He was sentenced to a Colored Waif's House, where he remained for 18 months. In 1917, after Louis returned home from the Colored Waif's House, he worked delivering coal and often spent his nights at local nightclubs in New Orleans. He befriended J... midway through the paper... suffered a massive heart attack, but that didn't stop him from performing. It wasn't until 1964 that Armstrong had the number one single "Hello Dolly" for the Broadway musical. That same year he suffered numerous health problems including kidney and heart problems. During the spring of 1971 he suffered another heart attack, only this time Louis Armstrong failed to recover and died on July 6, 1971, a month before his birthday in New York. Louis Armstrong was a highly successful jazz artist, trumpeter and cornetist. . Even though he only gained much recognition later and after his musical career he still paved the way for many other artists. He influenced many artists including Ella Fitzgerald.
