According to a survey of 10- to 16-year-olds by the advocacy group Children Now, "77 percent say there is too much premarital sex on TV, while 62 percent say sex on TV and in movies pushes kids to have sex when they're too young" (Clark, "Sex, Violence"). The influence of the media is felt everywhere and especially in terms of human sexuality. Everything from TV commercials to newspapers contains some form of sex, usually to maintain the audience's interest. In modern society, changing times and media executives who want more ratings (and therefore money) have led to teenagers being more willing to try sexual acts at a younger age and the country to be more open-minded about sexual matters. The main cause behind the rise of an obsession with sex is that media executives want better ratings and will therefore push more provocative and disturbing images into the public eye. Dan Jaffe, executive vice president of the Association of National Adherents, says, "If everyone was really that upset, no one would watch them. The best test is whether the ratings go down" (qtd. by Clark, "Sex, Violence"). At one point the FOX network was one of the worst at offending and upsetting many different people, including the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). They attempted to have FOX owner Rupert Murdoch denied a broadcast license by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) by claiming that the network had "brought the greatest debasement of taste, quality of characters and decency in the history of television" (qtd. by Clark, "Sex, Violence"). To get more ratings and more money, media executives are showcasing more obscenity and indecency than ever before and are having negative effects on teenagers. T... middle of the paper... the media. As has been proven, the impact of sex in the media effects modern society in both positive and negative ways. Teenagers seem to be more open to sexual activity at an earlier age due to the overabundance of media relating to sex. The country is more liberal on some sexual issues due to the sexual revolution of the 1960s and the evolution of the concept of sex in society. The impact of sex in media on society would decrease with proper sex education and media literacy which is an awareness of the impact of media. Works Cited Clark, Charles S. "The Obscenity Debate."
