When the books are reintroduced to Montag after burning them for years, he is finally able to think clearly. Montag burned books for the good of society, but once he obtained the Bible he was finally able to see his society for what it is. In the excerpt from the novel Fahrenheit 451 Ray Bradbury uses personification, simile, and repetition to convey Montag's chaotically changing emotional state during the subway ride, due to the books he begins to think of on his own. show how his mental state is starting to show a change. In a flashback he remembers the first time he thought to himself “The night I kicked the pill bottle in the dark, like I kicked a buried landmine” (Bradbury 1).
