At the beginning, the main character, Thomas, has his memory wiped, so he knows nothing. As time goes on, however, he begins to accept where he is (the Glade) and that the people in the Glade have nothing but each other. Thomas also adapts to the slang of the Glade and speaks like a Glader. He also saves the lives of some Gladers who are his friends, such as Alby. Thomas eventually became a leader of sorts, trying to make the best decisions when the rest of the Gladers didn't know what to do. Thomas speaks to other Gladers as someone would speak to their friends or family, and Thomas does his best to help protect the Gladers. Thomas is harsh and cold to the people of WICKED, as one of their workers eventually kills Chuck, one of Thomas' best friends at the Glade. He also has a crush on a girl named Teresa, and she and Thomas work together throughout the book. The main idea of the story is that the Gladers must get out of the Labyrinth. At first you see all the Gladers doing different jobs to help each other survive. One of the jobs is a runner. The racers go out into the Labyrinth and map it, trying to find a way out of the Labyrinth. They leave at dawn and return during meals. Thomas wants to become a runner, and eventually does, after saving Alby and showing Newt, Alby, and Minho that he has the skills to become a runner. Thomas learns the ropes of being a runner and tracks sections of the Labyrinth. Eventually, he and Teresa discover the Labyrinth's code and, with the help of other Gladers, piece it together. When the Gladers discover the code, they attempt to escape and ultimately do so, with some Gladers dying. The story and plot are fast paced, which I like, and the author has more action going on while the plot... middle of the paper... if they weren't in chronological order would probably be very confusing to the reader. I think the author chooses to order the events this way because he wants to maintain the kind of mystery present in the book, with the Gladers trying to figure out how to get out of the Labyrinth and I think if the events were in a different order it would ruin the story . The Gladers have a strange slang that only they use. Klunk – a word used as an insult; comes from the sound poop faShuck face - a word used as an insult, like calling someone an idiotGreen/Green Bean - a word that Glademen call the GladeShank newbie - a commonly used insultI think the author came up with this slang because he didn't want to use swear words and he wanted to show how the Gladers had developed their own way of life, their own civilization, including their own language.
