Woodside Avenue School is an institution known for high academic achievement and continuous student improvement. This document documents research and data analysis related to student proficiency scores, while considering critical demographics and challenges that contribute to our strengths and areas in need of improvement. The proficiency scores of the students studied focused on both Woodside's general student population and subgroups of students. Through this research we have found that, although our school has notable academic strengths, the language arts proficiency of our special education students in grades 3 and 4 needs to improve. Interviews were conducted with parents, teachers, students and community members to put together a vision for the school that represented the values of all stakeholders. Stakeholder attitudes, beliefs, and values were found to consistently emphasize the importance of student achievement and whole-child education. These results have led to the definition of a vision for the school for the coming year. The instructional and programming changes were developed with a strong focus on improving language proficiency for our special education students while still providing them with the social and emotional benefits that mainstreaming provides. Implementing these changes will require exemplary leadership and participation from all stakeholders, along with consistent and frequent assessments and evaluations of our progress. Once implemented, evaluated, and potentially improved, these changes will help our students and teachers grow in ways that will help sustain our vision over time. Vision PaperVision: At Woodside Avenue School, we have a clear vision for ho…halfway through the document…and, they can evaluate the need to reshape or strengthen it” (Deal & Peterson, 2009, p. 199). It is understood that the shared beliefs and values within the Woodside community are rooted in the high academic achievement as well as the social and character development of our children. Woodside Avenue School is already a strong representation of what we value, however our ideal future would be one where our children grow academically and as people. Through conversations with our students, staff, parents and community members about the type of school they would like Woodside to be, our vision for Woodside School is clear. We will improve student achievement in language arts proficiency by focusing on our special education students, while providing these students with the necessary mainstreaming that is important to building character and educating the whole child.
