In the resolutions of the Virginia Stamp Act of 1765 the colonists of Virginia express their grievances against the new Stamp Act issued by the Parliament. Patrick Henry formulates a series of resolutions against the Stamp Act to deem it formally unconstitutional in the eyes of the colonists. Henry's resolutions address the issue of Parliament unfairly taxing the colonists. The five resolutions state that settlers should be treated as fellow Britons in the mother country and should have the same “liberties, privileges and immunities”. They are English and should be treated as such. Virginia's Stamp Act resolutions were crucial in developing the idea of independence for the American colonists because they created the principle of no taxation without representation and the realization that Parliament was functioning unconstitutionally. The Stamp Act was a tax passed by the House on all printed documents used by American colonists. The Stamp Act crisis of 1765-1766 was the first event that germinated revolutionary thinking among the colonists. Tired of being unfairly taxed by Parliament, “American patriots took action” to prevent the tax from being implemented. “In May [1765], Patrick Henry persuaded the Virginia legislature to pass resolutions calling for the repeal of the law.” There were a total of five resolutions, each passed at the May 30 meeting of the Virginia House of Burgesses because more conservative leaders were absent. The fifth resolution stated that only the General Assembly of the Colony of Virginia should have the power to impose and collect taxes on its people. It was originally approved but upon the return of the other leaders it was withdrawn. Henry was not the only figure openly against P...... middle of paper ......sis further violation of colonists' rights would be met in the same way, with petitions, boycotts and finally war. You cannot simply bend the will of the people and impose unconstitutional laws without consequences, for Parliament it was war, it was the American Revolution and the loss of a precious resource.
