The Kind of Friends We Were SOAPSTONE*In The Kind of Friends We Were, there are two main characters, Kate and Marylin, but I'll make Marylin just to the parts where information on only one character is needed. Characters Marylin is a cheerleader who cares too much about makeup and her hair. "Marylin was now a middle school cheerleader and cared too much about her hair... she firmly believed that life could be just like it appeared in the women's magazines, where you and all your forever best friends gathered before the start of the school and made creative decorations for your lockers and swapped nail polish tips... Marylin believed that life could always be bright... It just took a little extra work and a little lip gloss, and the Life would have been like a TV show that everyone wanted to watch." (pages 3-4) Because Marylin is now a cheerleader, she believes that everything she does reflects who she is, so she must always be pink, sparkly, and absolutely perfect, otherwise people won't like her. “'Seventh grade is a time to, I don't know, hang out with your group of friends and get ready for high school. It's about finding your own personal style.'” (p. 22) She doesn't like to color outside the lines; she wants to be exactly who you would think a cheerleader would be. Her personality is very preppy and feminine, so she tends to talk a lot and be very enthusiastic and overly dramatic about things. But his main problem is that he doesn't know how to have a real friend. “What an interesting experience, he thought later… having a conversation and feeling good afterwards. Frankly, Marylin didn't know it was possible. (pg. 167) This was after Marylin had talked to Kate, who used to be...... middle of paper... you are. Instead of simply knowing that they have different interests, hobbies, and looks, you can also see how they think and react to things. I think this is helpful when you read, because you can see details that maybe you didn't catch or weren't there before, and it's interesting to see the same thing from different points of view.OrderMost of the events in The Kind of Friends We Were take place in chronological order. Sometimes, though, an event is written from Marylin's point of view, and then the same event is repeated from Kate's point of view. It's nice to be able to see the same event from two different perspectives, because it gives you more details about the event, which helps you have a greater understanding of the story. It also helps you think more about what is happening because you see it in two different ways.
