Drunk driving has blindly taken the lives of citizens and the punishment for this crime does not include its destruction. In Mississippi, a first-time drunk driving offense only results in a ninety-day license suspension. Drunk drivers kill people every year. If punishments for drunk driving became more severe and distracted drunk drivers paid the full consequences of their illegal behavior, the number of people killed by drunk drivers would decrease. Some argue that if the government strengthened drunk driving laws, it would have an economically negative effect on the social aspect of alcohol consumption in a city; however, DUI laws would have a direct effect on repeat offenders and drinkers who ignore the law. Some people argue that if stricter DUI laws existed, they would only have a negative financial effect on cities instead of stopping drunk driving. In the article "At Issue: Drunk Driving", the author explains how drunk driving remains a problem and what effect stricter drunk driving laws would have on social alcohol consumption in cities. The article states what people think about tougher social drinking laws: “Others believe the current legal limit is adequate and tougher laws would penalize social drinking instead of drunk drivers” (ProQuest Staff). The author argues that if the government passed tougher DUI laws, they would no more stop drunk driving than they would hurt the city financially. However, the safety of the people within the city should remain the priority over money. In the same article, the author states that the safety of people in cities is under threat.
