The American Revolution, which occurred between 1765 and 1783, was the political uprising that caused the separation of the thirteen colonies and the British Empire. He formed an independent nation known as the United States of America. Although slavery was still expanding, America began to earn its name, “Land of the Free,” as it began to grant people more rights, which included women's rights, changes in government, and ownership of land. The Revolutionary War had a major effect politically on the colonists, primarily women. Before the war women were deprived of all rights; they had to cook, clean and raise families. However, after the revolution, women began to gain more rights. Women gained the power to divorce their husbands if they chose, something they could never have done before. “The expansion of the public sphere during the Revolutionary era afforded women the opportunity to take part in political discussions and read newspapers” (On The Equality of the Sexes (1790), 154). After the revolution, women were allowed to participate in conversations that had to do with politics, they were given the right to inform themselves about the government by reading the newspaper. During the American Revolution, some women fought alongside men while other women nursed wounded soldiers back to health. The actions taken by women caused a change in ideas about women after the war, the Revolution was also accompanied by dramatic changes in women's lives. Before the Revolution, many women were involved in campaigns to boycott British imports. During the war, many women produced items for the war effort and ran farms and businesses in their husbands' absence. After the Revolution, American women, for the first... half of paper......erty, looked for evidence and found some in the Bible that said servants should hold fast to their leaders. The right to property allowed individuals to maintain their freedom while being able to keep their slaves, and although for slaves America was not becoming freer, the right to own slaves made Americans believe that America was becoming freer . After the revolution women gained freedom due to the great impact they made fighting in the revolution, free government gave citizens control in choosing their new leader and the right to own property made it “legal” for individuals to own slaves. Although the expansion of slavery undermined America's freedom, I believe that America was actually freeing itself through the growth of women's rights, the development of free government, and the right to own one's own possessions..
