Topic > Americans Divided - 2019

In America we have two major political parties, the Democratic Party and the Republican Party, each with different points of view. Democrats are labeled liberals and Republicans are considered conservatives. Neither party is made up of people who totally agree with everything the party stands for. Both parties disagree on three major issues: abortion, same-sex marriage and universal healthcare. I have found that my beliefs, ideas and views tend to lean more towards the Democratic side and I will focus on supporting the Democratic party on these three major issues in association with civil rights. Abortions are currently legal in the United States and many Democrats believe it should remain legal and women should have the right to choose abortion; because it is their constitutional freedom, consistent with Roe V. Wade (On the Issue). Democrats also believe that the individual American, not the government, can best shoulder responsibility for reproduction. They support family planning and adoption incentives; their goal is to make abortions rare, safe and legal. My view is that women should have the reproductive freedom to decide whether or not to have a child. Furthermore, I believe that if abortions were made illegal, it would not stop a woman from having an abortion, but it would lead to it being performed by untrained providers, resulting in a more dangerous procedure. However, women must take an active and responsible role regarding the use of contraception. Abortions should not be used as a form of contraception. Democrats' efforts to reduce the abortion rate include family planning, making it easier for women to carry pregnancies to term; and promoting adoption.
