Dr. AndersonEnglish1010 LS-01April 30, 2014Alert: Stop Standing Your Ground NowThere has been so much controversy over the right to stand your ground, and it's really a protection for those who are legitimately defending themselves. States such as: Arizona, Alaska, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Nevada, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, West Virginia are the numerous states that have passed their own basic law. Georgia's new gun law is said to be a recipe for killing with the passage of this HS60. This bill allows a person with a permit to carry loaded firearms even into clubs if sober and alert. Making it very dangerous and making more and more people feel invincible because they are able to maintain their position. As for other states such as Arkansas, Maryland, Rhode Island and Nebraska have regulations that stand their ground, meaning they will have to retreat before any resort to violence in the death. Now self-defense can be divided into different types of levels such as duty to retreat, castle doctrine and stand your ground. All of these laws have different regulations when it comes to self-defense. This law holds your ground, I really feel there needs to be regulation on how things are done - more people die than survive. This law allows people to use deadly force in self-defense with no other option. For some states, when it comes to maintaining their position, it is not necessary to follow the option of evading or withdrawing from the situation. The question I ask myself is: are all self-defense situations justified and does this law help or harm others more. You are arguing that your position is going too far and that people are not at... middle of paper... credible murders should really be looked at more carefully in these cases, and making sure all options are available have been exercised leaving no room for errors. If the murder met all the circumstances of self-defense, I don't think an innocent person who fears for his life should be prosecuted. However, if a person has the opportunity to escape or can change their situation so that the outcome could be different, they should do so instead of trying to continue to defuse or make the matter much more harmful. Going forward, I hope that then more people can work together and perhaps these laws can be abolished. We must also read and be aware of these laws and support politicians who vote against their passage, because if we don't get out and vote we can't change our justice system. This has made me more aware of things and has really impacted my knowledge of law.
