According to Brym and Lie, self-socialization is the ability to choose socialization from the wide variety of mass media offerings (2012:67). Before I was 15 I lived a boring life, with few friends and no idea what the real world was like. After the age of 15 I was able to socialize via Twitter. Twitter helps me socialize in several ways, such as gaining knowledge about things around me, boosting my confidence, and improving my fashion sense. In this essay, I would discuss these concepts and explain them theoretically from a symbolic perspective. Twitter has allowed me to have more information about activities in my environment. First, it helps my connection between me and my friends. Everyone in my intimate circle has the Twitter app and so there is no link missing in our friendship. This is because we all share the same ideas and communicate with each other. If I didn't have the Twitter app, I would be left out of most conversations. For example, there was a fight on Twitter last night and this was the hot topic of discussion today. If I didn't have the Twitter app I wouldn't have been aware of the fight on Twitter and would have gotten lost in the discussions. I also gain knowledge of the religious practices around me. Most of my followers have different religious backgrounds, during their religious celebrations I had the opportunity to wish them well and learn about the norms of their religions. For example, I learned why Muslim women wear Hijab so that they are judged based on their personality rather than their appearance. Twitter is also a learning social network. I had the opportunity to learn many things about people, about Canada, about different companies and...... middle of paper......I don't know what my friends expect me to wear in my intimate circle because, I don't have any knowledge of the trending fashion styles they know. Twitter also guides me to know what to wear and what not to wear. I follow the reports of many fashion critics and have become more knowledgeable about how the outside world expects me to dress to avoid being embarrassed. All in all, Twitter has made me knowledgeable about fashion styles. Symbolic interactionism is the best theory that can be used to analyze my concepts of self-socialization because its main focus is the meaning of self-socialization and deals with how individuals communicate to make their social contexts meaningful (Brym and Lie 2012: 16). I will discuss this theory from three points of view. These views include the development of the mirror self, role-playing, and self-image formation.
