Topic > Africa - 910

While reading Black Atlantic, there were several topics that seem to be very important, some of them are colonialism and emigration. These topics eventually break down into smaller subtopics; one of these subtopics appears to be the idea of evangelism. This leads heavily into the question of what this idea of evangelism really was and begins to open up questions such as: were the colonizers evangelising or proselytizing African populations? While reading several documents I found a mixture of both, many of the writers were absorbed in the thought that this concept of Africa was conveyed by the word of the colonizer. Other writers were not very supportive of this concept, as they saw that it was more about exploiting Africa for its riches, but they also thought that this idea of religion could ultimately benefit Africa. The writers who most closely embody this way of thinking were Delany, Crummell, and Crowther. Each writer closely recalls the same thoughts about religion as a tool for African people to thrive, but also about Africa as a global identity. Another writer who perhaps could have touched on these points, but in a larger role was WE Dubois. WE Dubois talks a lot about this idea of "Double Consciousness", the main concept is how the black man has a double consciousness and what every black man's desire is to form the singular state of both consciousnesses into one , and that this consciousness becomes the identity of both. This idea of having two thoughts, two souls, two unreconciled efforts and two warring ideals, comes from both colonialism and emigration, the reason for this is that a consciousness is made up of someone else's eyes, this could refer to the colonizer which implements all the ideas at t... middle of paper... overlooked, but since the black man has been recognized as worthy of enlightenment, it seems that there is now hope for Africa thanks to the institutions of the missionaries. Finally, Bishop Crowther, who was all for bringing Christianity to Africa, was very devoted to the Christian faith and wrote segments of the Bible in the African language. Crowther was an advocate of setting up Christian missionaries in Africa, he like Delany believed that Africa was not up to par with the world, in terms of wealth, knowledge and technology and that Christianity was a way of bringing these elements to Africa, Crowther also goes in depth with "Africa for Africans only" which he believed was an ignorant solution and that Africa needed help from outside to have a sense of improvement and that Christianity was doing that for Africa.
