Topic > Persuasive Essay on E-Cigarettes - 738

Since the introduction of e-cigarettes to the U.S. market in 2007, the use and regulations governing the product have been a topic of debate. Since the e-cigarette does not contain tobacco, it is not currently regulated by the FDA. The device essentially allows consumers to inhale nicotine, in the form of vapor, and satisfy the sensations associated with smoking without ingesting tobacco. Although the e-cigarette market is constantly growing, there is still a lot of opposition to the product because the possible side effects and adverse symptoms are not fully known. Furthermore, due to the growing media portrayal of e-cigarettes as something trendy and due to the lack of regulation governing these devices, many people fear that e-cigarettes may have greater appeal among young children, leading them to nicotine addiction. Furthermore, although it was suggested that e-cigarettes could be used as a smoking cessation treatment method, it was initially thought that the devices simply served to transfer addiction from cigarettes to electronic versions, the potential dangers of which have not yet been discarded. However, recent studies conducted on e-cigarettes have suggested that the devices have a promising ability to be used as a smoking cessation treatment method. Randomized controlled experiments have been conducted to demonstrate that the use of e-cigarettes, in fact, increases smoking reduction and abstinence. Comparison of the effects of this device with those of other products already in use in nicotine replacement therapy further supported the potential success of e-cigarettes in the treatment of smoking cessation... middle of paper... n over 400 ingredients and can create over 4000 chemicals when lit. Additionally, some of the chemicals found in devices deemed dangerous are found in other foods and products consumed. Proponents of e-cigarettes argue that the potential benefit they have should be enough to prevent the devices from being banned entirely. In response to counterarguments, advocates argue that the fact that the devices have been shown to increase smoking reduction and abstinence makes them a valuable tool for decreasing tobacco-related disease and mortality. Because I am arguing that, although e-cigarettes should be more strictly regulated, they should be implemented with caution as a means of reducing tobacco use, I will use more research findings to refute the counterarguments and evidence supporting their use.
