Topic > Brunei's commitment to achieving sustainable development:...

The World Commission on Environment and Development (1987, p.43 cited in Baker, 2006) defined "sustainable development" as " development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” It is a crucial necessity for Brunei Darussalam to become a sustainable country at the same time best promote economic prosperity. Although Brunei is still in the early stage, some sectors have made considerable progress in the field of sustainability. Despite the fact that Brunei Darussalam is still lagging behind in terms of sustainable development, with great effort and preparation Brunei Darussalam can achieve its main goal of becoming a sustainable country (Given Paduka Hj. Idris Hj. Abas, 2009) I will address some sustainable development strategies or initiatives in a number of areas, environments and resources fundamental energies. Besides that, I will also describe some challenges that Brunei Darussalam faces in achieving sustainable development. Since the inception of the National Environment Conference in 2008 to promote environmental sustainability, there has been a notable increase in actions to promote a more sustainable landscape within Brunei Darussalam. For example, the use of recycling bags, the "No plastic Bag Weekend" initiative in all business districts in Brunei and an improved waste management system and finally the implementation of recycling programs and the introduction of sustainable practices in the business sector. Furthermore, businesses can also contribute to Brunei's sustainable growth in terms of cost savings through improved operational performance and efficiency... middle of paper...
