Topic > A Dog's Journey by W. Bruce Cameron - 915

The main character is developed in the text. In the book the main character is a dog named Buddy, who is reborn as Molly, who is reborn as Max, who is reborn as Toby, who is the final incarnation of the dog. At the beginning of the book Buddy is an older dog who is some kind of large Labrador. "The fur on my legs was black like the rest of my body, but over time, my paws had turned white." (p. 1) It shows that it was an older dog, because when dogs get older their hair turns grey, like human hair. He is a brave and gentle dog. “I could see he was going to step on the baby. I was afraid of the horse... My instincts told me to back off, to get out of there, but Clarity was in danger and I had to do something, something now. I swallowed my fear and barked at that horse with all the fury I possessed. I pursed my lips, showing my teeth, and lunged forward, putting myself between Clarity and Troy... I backed away, still barking, pushing Clarity into the corner with my hips. ” (pages 22 and 23) This shows that Buddy knew that the horse could hurt him, but he would not back away because that would leave the child in danger, he was brave enough to protect her even though he was afraid. The next form of “he” is Molly (a female), a poodle mix. At first she is a little confused as to why she was born again, but she soon realizes that she has to take care of CJ (clarity in her teens, no longer a child). very compassionate towards CJ and knows he is extremely important to her “Later the back gate rang and me and Rocky rushed over to see who it might be, and there she was We both jumped on her and finally I growled at Rocky for acting like he was as important to her as I was. This shows that Molly knows it's me... middle of paper... that he doesn't like him and knows not to trust him firsthand from an inn for dogs, so it's different than what a human would think in some situations. The dog can also easily misinterpret what he should do in certain situations because he cannot understand what humans are telling him what to do. You can see it's first person because you're reading thoughts. Also use phrases like “I was confused” or “I was hoping.” The author tells events sequentially based on when they happen, just as if you were experiencing them yourself. Not with too much information about what will happen in the distant future, but there are little clues like sometimes you can tell what will happen, but still a little surprising. The order the book is set in makes it feel more realistic and like it was actually happening.
