As companies continue to evolve and compete in a global marketplace where consumers are afforded the opportunity to give and receive feedback from the immediate avenues of social media, the of the company becomes an ever-increasing concern for executives and shareholders. Because of this instant feedback, a company's actions are constantly under scrutiny and evaluation. In an effort to capitalize on this opportunity, business leaders have embraced the idea of corporate social responsibility, or CSR. Corporate social responsibility is a set of self-imposed policies to which a company commits and which involves the protection of the company, its internal and external relationships. shareholders, community and environment. There are four main components of CSR that most companies strive to uphold. These are listed as financial or economic, legal and ethical, and philanthropic responsibilities. As a global company with more than 2 million employees, Wal-Mart continually strives to uphold the small-town image and ideals that its founder Sam Walton instilled during its creation in 1962. It is critical that the first goal of any company, both internally and externally, must be that of an economic benefit for the individual stakeholders of that company. Wal-Mart is no different in that to offer any benefit to any person, it must make a profit. Therefore, the first objective of Wal-Mart's CSR is that of economic benefit. With projected 2013 revenue of nearly $470 billion, Wal-Mart has the means to benefit shareholders in the form of stock dividends, wages and benefits for its 2 million employees, and an economic benefit to communities in the form of tax revenue and goodwill. Time will tell whether these allegations are the norm or the exception to the rule and whether or not Wal-Mart has a CSR that is just a shell of its intent.
