President Truman claimed that the use of the atomic bomb saved "millions of lives" and quickly ended the war. However, ¬¬¬¬Long says there is no definitive answer regarding whether the war will result in fewer deaths or end sooner. Truman also said, “The world will note that the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, a military base. This is because in this first attack we wanted to avoid, as far as possible, the killing of civilians” (Webber). The U.S. Strategic Bombing Investigation later stated that Hiroshima and Nagasaki were targeted because of their activities and populations, contradicting Truman's statement. If the United States wanted to impress Japan's leaders, it could have dropped the bomb elsewhere to scare them and not scare them.
