Mark O. James studied whether L2 learners were concerned about correcting superficial errors during the text generation process and whether this regular interruption in composition resulted in a quality of inferior writing. He also wanted to know whether perceptions of their L2 behaviors accurately reflected observed behaviors and whether there were significant differences in composing fluency between Polynesian and Chinese learners. Data were collected using a behavioral protocol analysis: asking for a rough draft of the essay and recording students writing their essays. They then coded on a timeline each time the students stopped to think, were distracted, wrote, rescanned portions of the essay, reread the entire essay, or revised the text. The students were asked to answer a questionnaire, developed specifically for the study, by placing an "X" under the descriptor that best described them or their opinion: "always", "often", "sometimes", "never" , i.e. “I waste too much time before starting to write”. The questionnaire included 25 questions to see the various aspects of the students' perceived composition behavior and attitudes towards composition (only 9 were analyzed to obtain information to see if the subjects' perception corresponded to the observed behaviors). Furthermore, the essays were evaluated by two qualified evaluators, the scores allowing the analysis of the relationship between composition and writing competence. Participants were 8 students of Polynesian and Chinese ethnicity (4 of each; 7 were female and only 1 Chinese male) at an English-language institution in Hawaii. The students were unaware of who was being observed, they were approached to answer the questionnaire and return it the next day.
