In “My Daddy's Waltz” by Theodore Roethke, there was a great poem that can mean many different things to many different people in this world. To me I think he was just a boy who just wanted to spend time with his dad before going to bed. The boy probably doesn't spend much time with his father. The father probably works all day and all week and this is the only time the boy gets to spend with him. Roethke's use of words in this poem is amazing. The use of words in this story can mean different things to the reader. The first word to look at is the word waltz. In the dictionary the word waltz is a dance for a fast song in three metres. This is exactly what the father is doing with his son, but he is drunk and dazed. “But I resisted like death: such a waltz was not easy (Roethke)” The word death is not what people usually think of, but no one can shake or turn away from death. So the boy held tight to his father where his father couldn't move away from him as if the boy didn't want him to leave. “We went wild until the pans slipped off the kitchen shelf (Roethke)” another word to understand is wild. The word romped means to play or have fun in a lively or boisterous manner. To learn more about the definition, noisy means harsh and noisy. While the father and son play dancing, they also make a mess in the house. Making a mess of the kitchen will drive any mom crazy and that's what happens next. Among all other places in the house, the kitchen is the throne room of women. “The hand holding my wrist was battered on one knuckle; with every step you missed my right ear scratched a buckle (Roethke).” In lines 9-12 you can say that the father has returned from a long day at work. The father's job must be to do something with... middle of paper... that allows readers to access such powerful memories in their lives in ways consistent with the words and construction of the poem (Fong). " As you read the poem many times you start to feel memories of where you saw or were in that kind of situation. Works Cited Fong, Bobby. College Literature.
