The effect of catalase concentration on the degradation rate of h2o2The effect of catalase concentrations on the degradation rate of hydrogen peroxideScientific knowledge and understanding: a velocity is a measure of the change that occurs in a given time while an action is the interaction of substances that undergo a chemical change. The rate at which any mixture of substances transforms into one or more products in a given unit of time is the rate of the reaction. The speed with which this change occurs depends on two main factors; the quantity of collisions between particles that react and which part of these collisions manages to produce a change within the substances present. Reactions between chemicals will only occur if the particles collide with enough energy to break their initial bonds. This initial energy is called activation energy. Collision theory: To react, particles must collide with a force sufficient to overcome the activation energy. There are four methods for increasing the rate of a reaction, and all can be explained in terms of increasing the number of collisions between reacting particles;1. Temperature: When the temperature increases, the particles move faster because they have more kinetic energy, aided by heat. The faster the particles move, the more collisions there will be. Pressure (or concentration): the more concentrated a solution is, the more particles of a reactant are present. The greater the number of particles present, the greater the probability of collisions.3. Surface Area: If one of the reagents is solid, breaking it into smaller pieces will increase its surface area. This means that the particles in the surrounding solution will have a larger area to work with, so there will be more collisions in a shorter time. If both reagents are dissolved in solution/liquid state, surface area is not relevant and is directly related to pressure/concentration.4. Catalysts: Catalysts work by providing reactant particles with a surface to stick to, where they can collide with each other. A catalyst can also lower the activation energy of the particles. This will obviously increase the number of successful collisions. An enzyme is a protein that acts as a biological catalyst, accelerating the rate at which a biochemical reaction takes place, w... middle of paper... decided to continue each experiment for 3 and a half minutes to obtain 14 results for each concentration. The more results you get, the easier it is to graph and draw the beat fit line. I reduced the time from 5 to 3 and a half minutes, which I had done in my preliminary because the volume did not change much after 4 minutes and in this way I could repeat the same experiment several times, to have a more accurate average result. Safety :Of the devices used, some are made of glass and therefore very fragile. Care must be taken that none of the appliances are knocked over/fallen and broken, as the glass would shatter. In case of breakage, DO NOT TOUCH ANY BROKEN GLASS, but call the supervising teacher immediately. Hydrogen peroxide also needs to be handled with caution. It is a corrosive chemical; therefore you need to wear a lab coat and protective glasses. In case of contact with skin, wash immediately with soap and water. To reduce the risk of any leakage, the transfer of H2O2 into different containers must be limited, as in step 5 of the method where it is transferred from the beaker to the syringe directly into the conical flask..
