Homeless. Every 1 in 100 San Francisco residents are affected by this disease and try to survive on the streets without help, support or charity. Many people walking downtown don't even recognize the homeless, let alone treat them like normal human beings. To combat this, it is essential to put homeless people into permanent housing, get as many people to volunteer to do local projects like helping at a food bank or work in a shelter, and help help the homeless by donating clothes, food and other goods . books. Homeless people are still people and society needs to start realizing this and changing its view of them. As the root cause of homelessness inability to pay rent, the first step to combat homelessness is to begin building permanent housing in major cities. According to the National Coalition for the Homeless, in 2001, five million rental families had "worse housing needs," meaning that according to Gurley's article, 1 in 10 homeless women are raped every year and that number is slowly growing . If society supports the homeless by building shelters, we can drastically reduce the number of victims on the streets. I came up with an idea to help the homeless in my community and I called it "Bags of Hope". I fill the bags with food, water and basic necessities like toothpaste and toothbrush. Every time I saw a homeless person I gave them a Bag of Hope and seeing them full of hope meant so much to me. It all started as a project for school, but it turned out to be much more than I expected. I started going out every weekend looking for the homeless so I could spread hope with my Bags of Hope. This is just one of countless solutions to help reintegrate the homeless into society and help them live healthy, normal lives.
