A society open to all is also a society in which everyone is vulnerable to some extent. As reading, writing, and shopping increasingly occur on the Internet, citizens around the world fear that the personal details of their lives will be “monitored, searched, recorded, and archived” (Curley 45). Fear and suspicion have increased, so Internet users must be careful about how they use their personal data and who can see it. If this data were stored on paper, a computer hacker would not be able to access it. Most people would consider the protection of their sensitive data over the convenience of purchasing items online. A data breach by another person could result in identity theft, which would result in a myriad of legal and financial lawsuits
