Topic > Destruction and poverty in Haiti - 660

On January 12, 2010, over 200,000 deaths occurred in Haiti due to the earthquake. Destruction and devastation were seen across the country. The population of Haiti was suddenly put into a state of universal panic. Poverty and desperation struck the inhabitants of Haiti. Destruction surrounded every corner. Building after building was crushed in on itself. Piles of trash burned in the streets, and hundreds of thousands lived in tents that were nothing more than tarps and sheets. People walked aimlessly through the rubble trying to find some pieces of their old lives. There is no doubt that everyone in Haiti was affected by the earthquake. (CNN Library, 2014). Before the earthquake, Haitians already lived in a highly impoverished nation. A household in Haiti will typically contain more than one family. It is very rare in Haiti for a particular person to own their own household separate from family members. For this reason, it is sometimes difficult for Haitians to live in the United States and recreate this type of arrangement due to economic problems. Since Haitians like to live with a lot of family under one roof, all family members benefit jointly. Tasks such as farming and building new homes can be completed quickly with many people. Haitians like to label themselves as crabs in a bucket, because if one crab is about to escape, the others will pull it down to stay together (Jacobson, 2003). The day the earthquake struck Haiti, approximately 230,000 people were killed. Over 300,000 were injured. In addition to the people already homeless in Haiti, another 1.5 million people have lost their homes. Nearly 5,000 schools were affected by the earthquake severely affecting children... half of the paper... hungry and dehydrated women can't lift 150 pound bags of rice, so everything would be taken away by the strong males who then hoarded the rice or sold it at ridiculously inflated prices. In one way or another, the earthquake affected every member of the Haitian community. Haiti is still recovering from all the damage it suffered. Lives, homes and schools were completely wiped out. Billions of dollars were lost due to all the damage. Even after the earthquake people were still affected. Cholera sickened citizens and some died. The spirit of the Haitians was completely destroyed. (CNN Library, 2014). ReferencesCNN Library (2014, January). Haiti Earthquake Fast Facts. Retrieved from http://www.cnn.com/Jacobson, E. (2003).
