Topic > Short Story: 'The Prime Time' - 2229

I met her in the fall, right after she had taken a terrible fall going to the mailbox and I was hired by her family as a house assistant. Her name was Jane* and she became an instant friend and provided me with unforgettable lessons that cannot be taught within the walls of a school. Jane took the time to show me that I was worth loving and showed me the unconditional love that I couldn't find at the time. In the end all I have left are some cherished memories, a pearl necklace and some of life's best lessons. Jane was eighty when I met her and was in what she called "prime time." He had an old Cadillac that we would get into every Wednesday and drive out of town. Lucy sat on the passenger side and talked to me about the most important things a woman needs to know: always carry lipstick, keep pearls in the mattress, and never be without love in your heart. She was less than five feet tall and weighed less than fifty pounds, but she was my rock and in a short time I learned to love her and appreciate every moment I was lucky enough to spend with her. Little did I know about the impact it would have on my life and how a little love from Jane would help me get far in life. When I met Jane I had been deemed infertile by seven different doctors. I had suffered from what they called a severely traumatized uterus which later developed into endometriosis and uterine prolapse. I never had the chance to be what everyone called normal. Where I come from is what you do: you get married and have kids. If you don't have a child you are considered unfit and despised. I remember a lady once said to me, "Well, you must have done something to make God angry if he took away the or...half of the paper...I can't bear to see what it was" slowly becoming I knew there would come a day when he wouldn't remember my name but I hoped he would remember my face. It was then that I finally realized what Lucy had given me without even knowing it. he had given me love, he helped me come to terms with my faith, but above all he helped me find myself. Lucy died a few years ago, diagnosed with end stage Alzheimer's and stage four breast cancer. When I saw his face staring back at me from the obituaries I did the only thing that felt right, I got down on my knees and thanked God for the angel he sent me when I didn't deserve her and I prayed for him. to help her find Harry. I knew he was no longer in pain and that he had finally had the end of his perfect fairytale love. She didn't have to love me, but she did.
