Biography Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809 in Boston Massachusetts. (A-1) His parents were English actors Elizabeth Arnold Poe and David Poe Jr. (A-2) After the death of his parents he was raised by his godfather John Allen, a wealthy merchant from Richmond. (B-1) The Allans took him to Europe where he began his education in schools in Scotland and England. (B-2) He returned to the United States in 1820 and continued his education in Richmond and in 1826 attended the University of Virginia. (B-3) Poe showed remarkable scholastic ability in the classical and romance languages ​​but was forced to leave university after 8 months due to arguments with his godfather over his gambling debts. (B-4) John refused to pay Poe's debts and forced him to work as a clerk.
