What is kinesiology tape? Kinesiology tape (KT) is an elastic therapeutic tape available in many colors and there are many different taping techniques for different treatment conditions. KT claims to be a good aid for rehabilitation purposes such as correcting muscle function by strengthening weakened muscles, improving blood and lymph circulation, reducing pain, repositioning the subluxated joint by relieving abnormal muscle tension. The tape should be applied to the skin of the affected area. Different taping methods help in different rehabilitation functions. The claimed physiological effect of KTKinesiology tape is claimed to have a certain tensile force to lift the skin and increase the spaces between the muscles. This will reduce localized pressure and promote circulation and lymphatic drainage. This meant the reduction of pain, swelling and muscle spasm. KT also claimed to increase muscle activation. In theory it has been suggested that by bandaging the affected area, one could stretch the skin laterally and this will cause the mechanoreceptors in the skin to continuously send information to the brain. This will in turn create an illusion of movement from the affected area causing the brain to ignore the pain signals and instead cause the motor unit in the affected muscle to fire continuously. Taping applied under tension in the direction of the muscle fibers will apparently help to facilitate underlying muscle strength and therefore in turn help to increase the strength of the muscle (Morrisey et al, 2000) CriticismKinesio taping has been widely criticized for being a sham and for simply giving off a placebo effect by leading patients or athletes to believe it helpsMethodsThere is numerous research in the literature... middle of paper... ankle instability has been found to be no better than ankle brace and sports tape. The upside of kinesiology tape is that, due to its elasticity, it could provide better freedom of movement for athletes. So it depends on what the athlete wants, a sturdy support to prevent ankle inversion is recommended to use a sports tape or an ankle brace. A less robust stand but offers more flexibility, we recommend using KT. With regards to rehabilitation purposes, KT Consequently this study concludes that KT is not an "indispensable accessory", but rather an accessory that is good to have. If the patient and athlete felt that KT helps them in their treatment or sports performance, they could continue to use KT as there are no studies that have found the application of KT to have any adverse effects. This study also recommends that the patient sticks to the most effective treatment modalities a
