Topic > The British Petroleum Oil Spill - 2030

nintroductionIt is estimated that there are approximately three and a half thousand oil rigs scattered throughout the Central Planning Area in the Gulf of Mexico, most of them no more than 50 miles away from the coasts of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. On the other side of the coasts are the wetlands, a paradise ecosystem for many species that live there. Much of it is inaccessible and untouched by human activity. In 2010, an event occurred that caught almost everyone's attention. An explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig that caused a huge oil spill producing devastating effects caused by a simple mistake that shouldn't have happened in the first place. Because of this, several consequences occurred and many research investigations were initiated to find out why it happened, what the oil company did about it and what should have been done to prevent the oil spill. Basic Information: The Gulf of Mexico has approximately 3,540 miles of coastline stretching from Florida, United States, to the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. According to Gore (1992) America covers about 1631 miles of the Gulf of Mexico coast and there are 5 American states that border the Gulf and they are Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. The combined population of these 5 states in 2010 was approximately 56,227,000 (United States. Census Bureau, 2010) With an area of 9,826,675 square km, the United States of America is the third largest country in the world with an estimated population of 316,668,567. The United States is divided into 50 states and one district, and due to the size of the country, the climate can vary from state to state... ... middle of paper ...... and the anomalous negative pressure test and being unable to ensure that maintenance inspections were completed regularly and on time. The failure to recognize or ignore faulty or broken machinery to save time or money or even make the job easier can easily accumulate and set off a whole chain reaction of problems. BP's efforts in trying to fix the well and the lack of options they had available to create a blockage were very poor and for a leak of this magnitude there should have been a much better reaction to seal the well much earlier in an attempt to save the environment. BP's main focus should now be to put money into research to minimize the chances of this happening again by creating a permanent solution that is quick and easy to apply if this were to happen again. Efforts should be made to train workers to be able to deal with situations better.
