Into the wild is a book about a young man who leaves society to hitchhike to Alaska and live alone in the wilderness. “Christopher Johnson McCandless graduated from Emory University in May 1990 with a bachelor's degree in history and anthropology”p.20. "Toward the end of June, Chris mailed his parents a copy of his final grade report."p.21. He was a well educated man. He had many opportunities in life to succeed. “It was the last time anyone in Chris' family would hear from him.”p.22. In August, Chris' parents received his grades in the mail. He asked the post office to delay sending his final grades to his family. The period in which this book is set is the late 1990s. Most of this book is set in the Western United States, which at the time of the book was not very populated. "after leaving Las Vegas in May 1991." p.38 "we know that he spent July and August on the Oregon coast, probably in the vicinity of Astoria." p.39. “In September he took U.S. Highway 101 to California and then headed east again into the desert. And by early October he had landed in the town of Bullhead, Arizona. p.39. These are the places he visited along the West Coast of the United States. This book would appeal to the young adult readership looking for an adventure. It's also a great book about wilderness and survival. The author highlights the journey Christopher took. “For two years he walks on the earth. No telephone, no swimming pool, no animals, no cigarettes. Maximum freedom. An extremist. An aesthetic traveler whose home is the road." p.163. This may concern the public because some people choose to live without additional services. The purpose of this book is to address the problems of isolation from society. Christopher has so many opportunities but chooses to give it all up to live in the wilderness. “I was given unusual freedom and responsibility at an early age, for which I should have been extremely grateful, but I wasn't.” p.148. “Ten days and nights of freight trains and hitchhiking take him to the great white north. No longer poisoned by civilization, he escapes and walks the earth alone to lose himself in the wilderness. p.163. Christopher spends several years travelling.
