Education in unit or group thinking must be encouraged and strengthened. The fact that newborn Rosarie will enter the home poses unique challenges that will require all family members to work together. Maria, Jamie and Alice should be educated about the signs and symptoms of respiratory distress in the newborn and the interventions that should be initiated when distress occurs. The nurse responsible for this teaching must request both verbalization and return of the demonstration of the skills learned to ensure correct reception of the information. Once skills have been developed by the adults within the home, the remaining children should also be educated about the signs and symptoms and actively participate in care. Involving the entire family will lead to cohesive thinking and allow the family to work as a unit. Maria and Jamie should be provided a referral for marriage counseling so that they can resolve their existing problems while improving their chances of a successful marriage. There should be routine checks (phone calls, visits, etc.) for the family by both social services and paediatricians. Additionally, community outreach programs (food banks, cultural organizations, etc.) are designed to support families like the Perez's; Nurses working within the community should inform these families of these resources.
