Educators must encourage parents of all cultures to become part of the school culture. One way to do this is through activities. An activity that a teacher can collaborate on is "Family Culture Evening". The purpose of this activity is to recognize a culture by organizing an evening to celebrate a group's culture. This celebration is used to publicly recognize and celebrate a specific culture. (Sjar,2011) This celebration is aimed at the cultural group, however it is also adapted to the class. It allows the class to become familiar with the cultures of the group. For the evening to be meaningful and fun, all classes should have the same culture. There are many things that help facilitate an event like this. You have to find a time that suits many parents. This can be done through a survey. Making sure you plan an event to accommodate as many people as possible will ensure parents feel appreciated and more people will attend the event. (Syrja,2011,1801) This helps solve the problem that most teachers are worried about: people not showing up. Once the event is scheduled, find any Ell parents who want to get involved in helping to plan the celebration. When you contact them make sure you make a phone call and not simply send a letter home with the children. Having you call the parent directly is more personal. It may also be helpful if messages to family are sent in their primary language. This makes the family feel comfortable and more appreciative of their culture. Calling helps ensure there will be help planning the event. The planning process is up to teachers, parents and students. However, all events should include food, entertainment, and some sort of… medium of paper… language more or less. They are also aimed at helping not only students, but also teachers and parents. It is important to remember that instructions and strategies can be modified based on the child's acquisition levels and on his affective filter. The higher the filter, the more the teacher will have to work on strategies and the environment to make the child feel comfortable. The biggest difference between the third activity and the first two is that it is more focused on introducing ELLs to American culture. The first two activities, however, are more focused on helping ELLs share their culture. .No matter what strategies or activities a teacher chooses, they will hopefully end up with the end goal of children being more culturally diverse and one step closer to no longer being an ELL student.
