This is the road less traveled and not many people have taken it. Pollan's transparency in The Omnivore's Dilemma is admirable. It documented his recognizable struggle over food and morality. His disgust with the federal regulatory regime was extremely evident when he denounced it, confirming accusations that filthy slaughterhouses are run by many unskilled workers who do not place health or humane treatment as a top priority (250). Pollan also had the advantage of seeing both sides of the issue. He was given a first-hand view of how much blood, sweat and tears go into producing quality food. He also knew the unclean ways of the food industry and the shortcuts taken for mass production. A farmer named Bev has found that people who have problems with the food industry are usually upset by animal cruelty, pesticides, nutrition, or taste.
