Today's world is the result of centuries of evolution; one of the biggest adaptations is technology, specifically the invention of the smartphone. Smartphone is a mobile phone that has the ability to perform functions similar to those of a computer (Oxford Dictionaries online dictionary, n.d.). The smartphone is mostly owned by young people; however, adults and seniors are also moving towards using this device. This in turn proves the popularity of this wonderful device and is the reason why it is constantly monitored by its users. The continuous evolution of the desires and needs of populations such as communication, information seeking, entertainment and recording makes owning a smartphone essential and advantageous as it is portable, reliable and efficient. To begin with, the most important function of the smartphone is for communication purposes. Communication is transmitted in many forms; SMS, calls or via social networking sites. SMS is the most common and fastest way of communication. Research conducted by Pew Internet and the American Life Project indicates that 9 out of 10 American smartphone users send and receive text messages (MarketingCharts, 2011). The text function allows the delivery of information quickly, regardless of the recipient's location. On the other hand, while this allows for a much faster way of communicating with people, it also diminishes the ability to use other, much older ways of communication. According to a Huffington Post article, Cris Rowan, a therapist, claims that texting leads to “no creativity, no imagination, no self-initiation” (Bindley, 2011). However, SMS and emails are often seen as a disadvantage since many studies indicate that ... middle of paper ... with advances in technology, the smartphone manages to remain stationary as one of the most popular devices of culture modern.
