The change observed in modern society can be traced back to the period between the 18th and 19th centuries. It is during this period that Western Europe achieved rapid economic growth and development. This occurred through the agrarian and industrial revolutions that swept Europe, especially Western Europe, causing in its wake a rapid development and change in gender roles and lifestyles in general (Collins, 2006). It is also in Western Europe that events such as the French Revolution brought about enormous changes in society, completely altering the lifestyle of its citizens. However, the change did not stop at Western Europe, but spread to other Eastern Bloc countries, such as Russia. This occurred mainly through the influence brought by bilateral relations. The changes thus brought about affect all spheres of people's lifestyle, including legal rights, access to education and positions of power, family size, fashion and ways of socializing. Society in this period was dominated by men. Men enjoyed positions of power and responsibility and made all decisions regarding the family. Access to education was also the prerogative of male children. Rights such as inheritance and land were attributed to male offspring due to family continuity. However, with changes in Western society, women began to enjoy some of these rights, albeit minimally at first.
