Trench warfare in World Wars I and II was very deadly. Many soldiers in the trenches died of random causes. Almost every trench in both wars was very bad. It was a place no one would ever want to be or go. Trenches were built in every way imaginable. They were built above ground and underground. The construction of the trenches was very difficult and time consuming. It would have taken 450 men and six hours to build a 250 meter long trench. Most of the trenches were about two meters deep and two meters wide and had never been built in a straight line. They built the trenches in a zigzag pattern because if they dropped a bomb on one part of the trench the explosion wouldn't be able to kill everyone. They also did this to prevent poisonous gases from spreading into the trenches and so that the enemy could not run and shoot in a straight line and kill everyone. They built trenches like that to keep everyone from dying at the same time. People dying in the trenches was very random and very common. About 1/3 of Allied casualties on the Western Front occurred in the trenches. Many men in the trenches died from bullets. Shell fire would cause many of them to be buried alive due to the trench collapsing on them. Many men also died from grenades and bullets. About 1/3 of the men who died in the trenches died of disease or other medical reasons. The biggest problem with the trenches was the weather conditions. The weather would make the trenches muddy, cold and depressing. Many soldiers died due to the weather. They would have been exposed to the cold for a long period of time and would have frozen to death. When people died there was a high probability that they would not be buried. Soldiers normally... middle of paper... soldiers also used gases to kill the enemy. The three great gases were chlorine, phosgene gas, and mustard gas. The most used was mustard gas because it was less detectable. Eventually the tank was invented, it was almost impossible to stop it, so they used it to break through enemy lines, especially to break through trenches. Soldiers also broke through the lines by using miners to dig tunnels towards the enemy trench and plant a mine to detonate it so they could attack them. I think trench warfare was very deadly. I wouldn't want to be on the front lines in one of the trenches unless I had to. The environment from which the trenches and all the bombing came was greatly affected. It killed much of the wildlife and also destroyed vegetation. He starved the people around where he was and caused a famine. I am very happy to live in America.
