The United States has been facing the problem of obesity for some time now. And no matter how much we delve into this issue, we will find many reasons for the cause. In today's society, politicians are inclined to take this problem seriously because it now affects our children on a large scale. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 1 in 3 adolescents between the ages of 6 and 19 are overweight. Many believe this is a problem of poor eating habits and in some cases a lack of healthy food options. The documentary Food Inc. talks about schools choosing healthy lunch options sourced from local agriculture. In this article I will evaluate how Wisconsin public schools have adopted programs that will bring local farmers into schools to teach and provide healthy local meal options, and how these programs will benefit both the school and the farmer. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) joined with AmeriCorps in 2008 to launch a regional program called the Farm to School Program. This program has secured funding that helps organizations and farmers serve their community in production and education. The goal of this program is to provide an innovative approach to reducing childhood obesity by promoting healthy eating habits in students. The program also aims to increase access to local food in schools and the community. With one of the longest-running farmers markets in the nation, Madison Wisconsin is a great place to see how local farmers can impact your school and community.
