Dell Computers Sustainability Performance MetricsDell Computer Corporation is the world's largest supplier of personal computers (Fleming, 2006). Dell's goal is to be “the greenest technology company on the planet” (Ball, 2008, p. 1). Therefore, Dell, like many companies today, establishes sustainability initiatives to convince regulators, stakeholders and consumers of their commitment to protecting society and the environment. However, companies must support these claims with tangible performance metrics. Therefore, we examine some of the processes, programs, and reports that Dell uses to identify and measure performance. Performance MeasurementsDell Computer Corporation believes that stakeholders should be given long-term value by ensuring that the company is committed to and integrates economic, social and environmental sustainability into its goals. business practices (Litten, 2005). Therefore, Dell's commitment to this goal is highlighted by becoming a Ceres company (Fleming, 2006). Ceres is a national coalition of investors, environmental groups and public welfare organizations that assist companies with sustainability efforts. Therefore, Dell was praised for being the first in the computing industry to partner with Ceres (Fleming, 2006). Furthermore, companies involved in Ceres must agree to the following terms: discuss sustainability issues with shareholders and stakeholders, publish sustainability reports to the public, and commit to continuously improving sustainability efforts (Fleming, 2006). Therefore, based on Dell's definition of sustainability and its affiliation with Ceres, it can be assumed that industry standards, sustainability performance and shareholder reaction are key performance drivers. Accordingly, aspects of this assumption are found in Del... at the heart of the document ......could be measured or in what constitutes a 'footprint' (Ball, 2008). As a result, Dell is no different from other companies that try to calculate emissions on their own terms. Conclusion The importance of sustainability is clear. Regulators, stakeholders and consumers expect companies to take into account the impact their business practices have on society and the environment. Therefore, companies must not only promise to take action, but also provide realistic and tangible performance metrics that amplify their level of commitment. While this is a challenge that all businesses face, Dell has risen to the challenge. Dell's sustainability performance is measured, monitored, tracked and disclosed through its annual sustainability reports. Since sustainability is continuous, even more work is needed. However, Dell's overall score is impressive.
