Topic > What is citizen journalism or public journalism?

The term citizen journalism or public journalism has spread widely across the world as it has been linked to the publication of news and information. It can be simply defined as an alternative source of news produced and published by the general public. The concept of citizen journalism is not a new phenomenon and started a long time ago. What has changed is the importance and prevalence of citizen journalists as an alternative source of information and news around the world. There is debate as to whether citizen journalism has transferred news in a positive or negative way. Some experts argue that citizen journalism has many disadvantages, such as lack of credibility and low objectivity, which make it an unreliable source of news compared to traditional media. However, others support citizen journalism because it has important benefits such as promoting the democratization of society and increasing the speed of news. Therefore, this essay will argue that citizen journalism has seemingly positive aspects in promoting democratization by removing corrupt regimes and being the first to provide media coverage. To some extent, citizen journalism has several disadvantages that can have negative effects on the quality of the news provided. One of these disadvantages is the low level of credibility. Therefore, citizen journalists are usually not invited to participate in any press conference or meeting because they do not have formal training and qualifications in the media field (Bruns 2010 p.3). Furthermore, a study conducted in Singapore by the Polytechnic University on 801 people shows that 80% of the people who participated in the study think that traditional media are better than citizen journalism due to their credibility problems (Elsem...... paper middle ......according to Sambrook (2005), citizen journalism covering news could be used sometimes by traditional media, for example, online journalism took part in the coverage of the terrorist attack which occurred in London with BBC channel they shared 1,000 photos, 20 videos, 20,000 emails and 4,000 text messages in the first 6 hours and their media was used to make headlines in major news channels. Also, another example is the earth storm in Haiti, followed by citizen journalists who used the Internet to show the world the horrible situation by publishing many images (Barnes 2012). This evidence shows that citizen journalism's rapid dissemination of news can provide immediate coverage. Improving the democratization of society and increasing the speed of news are great benefits for public journalism.
