The possibility of Asian carp entering the Great Lakes is a huge problem that takes time and money to solve. The US Army Corps of Engineers is currently evaluating possible barriers to keep Asian carp out of the Great Lakes waters (http://www.ibtimes.com/ending-asian-carp-threat-great-lakes-will-could it takes 25-years-plus-18b-but-recommended-strategies). The huge fish are currently being kept out of the Great Lakes using electric fences (http://www.popularmechanics.com/science/environment/natural-disasters/how-to-stop-the-carp-invasion). These are effective for now, but have failed to some extent, since Asian carp DNA has already been found in Lake Michigan. Asian carp pose a serious threat to the economy of Michigan and nearby states, as well as the natural environment. If the government doesn't act quickly, these terrifying fish will invade the Great Lakes. Asian carp were first imported to the United States from Southeast Asia in the 1970s to filter pond water in Arkansas. These are actually three different species of carp: black carp, silver carp and bighead carp (www.nwf.org/Wildlife/Threats-to-Wildlife/invasive-Species/Asian-Carp.aspx). Silver carp can grow up to thirty-nine inches and sixty pounds. Bighead cars are even larger, sixty inches and one hundred and ten pounds (www.healthywatersolutions.org/content/asian-carp-facts). They have extremely sensitive ears due to a small bone that connects the swim bladder to the inner ear called the Werberian apparatus (http://www.popularmechanics.com/science/environment/natural-disasters/how-to-stop-the-carp -invasion). Because of their sensitive ears, they jump out of the water when frightened. This makes them extremely harmful… to the middle of the paper, but also to the economy of Michigan and other states around the Great Lakes. The US Army Corps of Engineers has been researching possible solutions to the problem, but if the government does not act quickly, 5% of the global market will be destroyed and a vast environment will be invaded. Life would be very different in the states surrounding the Great Lakes if this terrible threat were not averted.
