In 1999, police officers killed a man they had been chasing for three hours straight. As he was being chased, five California television helicopters broadcast the event live, and the entire public, including his family, saw his death. Church teaching reveals whether live broadcasting of violent acts is ethical or unethical. Over the years the media has increased reporting of real violent acts, but they are not beneficial to the common good due to the negative effects they have on human dignity. First, the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that all media are limited to what the common good requires. To illustrate, Pope Paul VI states that “The information provided by the media is at the service of the common good” (CCC 2494). This shows that all information disclosed by the media must be beneficial to the common good. Second, the Catechism states that all media broadcast to the public must never be opposed to the common good. For example, Pope Paul VI states that “[the media] must adapt their economic, political or artistic and technical aspects so as to never be contrary to the common good” (Inter Mirifica 11). Revealing that the media must not disclose any information that could “thwart the common good”. Third, the media spreads violent and unbridled acts, which undermine the value of human dignity. For example, the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that “social justice can only be achieved by respecting the transcendent dignity of man” (CCC 1929). This means that "real" news can only be useful to the common good if it respects the dignity of man. Finally, the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that regardless of the physical or mental state people in the media are in, they must still respect... the medium of paper... and the dignity" of the person(s) must always be respected. Therefore, the media must take into account the harm they could cause to the public and the loss of respect for human dignity. Media coverage of real acts of violence in the news does not serve the common good human to information as a tool to transmit as much news as possible for profit. They do not censor any gratuitous violence. Journalists are to blame because of the responsibility they have to disseminate the information they have learned to the public it can harm the public and disrespect people's dignity. Over the years the media's perspective on what "news" is has changed dramatically, from information to entertainment. No matter where you go or what you watch, for some reason there is always violence.
