This is the area where I may struggle to “see patients as people”. Being able to balance the impact our emotions have on decisions is vital. Sometimes a poor affective orientation can prevent you from seeing patients as people. My scores demonstrate that my affective orientation is low. Only when you can understand your own emotions, can you understand someone else's emotions. There is a possibility that because I do not use my emotions to make decisions, I will not be able to see the patient as a person. I may not be able to comfort them, as I will not connect with them emotionally. The low affective orientation will be visible through my nonverbal cues and probably also through my conversation. As a result, the patient may not be able to connect with me and believe in my counseling. As a result, affective orientation is an important part of the role of a pharmacist, so moderate levels of affective orientation are essential to my success as a pharmacist.
