Fountainhead and The open boat In today's world there are many types of people who do things of their own free will. In the novel "The Source" it is shown that people made their own decision to go where they wanted to go of their own free will. In the story “The Open Boat” men have shown that they open up to their instincts and follow their own path for survival. Both stories show many forms of determinism, objectivism, naturalism, collectivism, realism, etc. All to be shown of one's own free will. Ayn Rand was young when she was exposed to many forms of society. He spent much of his childhood growing up in Russia. He learned the ways of capitalism and its flaws. He detested capitalism and objectivism. He has written many novels that expose society for what it is and how wrong it can be. Ayn has expounded much more in the story of The Fountainhead. In "The Fountainhead" Ayn Rand shows her views on free will. It belligerently shows how the world has come to collectivism to live its life. ""Good." Mrs. Keating said, “Go to Fine Arts. It's a great place. A whole ocean away from your home. Of course, if you go, Mr. Francon will bring someone else. People will talk about it. Everyone knows that Mr. Francon picks Stanton's best guy for his office every year. I wonder what it would be like if some other guy got the job? But I guess it doesn't matter.”” (P.35). one can be “emotional” about not being better than one's peers around them. Ayn's point about free will in this quote shows how Peter Keating had the choice of accepting Guy Francon's job offer or going to the job. Academy of Architecture of Fine Arts, even though his mother was pressuring him to accept... ... middle of paper ......human life using nature and the environment around said person, in “The Open Boat.” Both use irony, naturalism, objectivism, determinism, etc. to highlight modern human nature. Free will is something that every man/woman possesses and over which only he/she has control. Every day we make choices that affect us positively or negatively. I have seen people give up their free will, only to ease the pressure of society, subsuming them and making them “second-hand” (Rand). Free will is now loosely expressed, and the true definition of the terminology is long lost. But definitions are opinions and my opinion on free will is that we as human beings have a choice and it is up to us to use what we have available, we have free will to do what we want. It is important to be free. It is important to make your own choices. And it's very important to be different.
