The two methods according to Sherman (2009) are open education and differential education; both help influence progressivism because their goal is to increase students' individual growth (p. 42). Unlike essentialism, progressivism strives to achieve “recognition of each child's uniqueness, personal relevance in the learning process which requires an active and engaged quality of the learning environment” (Sherman, 2009, p. 43 ). In short, progressivism abandons academic standards for freer, needs-based learning. This represents a boon for progressive classes, who are tired of standardized tests.
