In the story "The Help" written by Kathryn Stockett we are taken back in time to Jackson, Mississippi, in August 1962, where we meet three women named Aibileen, Minny and Skeeter. Aibileen and Minny are black women who work for white families as help. Skeeter is a young white woman in her early twenties who befriends the other two and convinces them to tell their stories of what it's like to be helpful. They reluctantly hesitate, but ultimately give in knowing that the stories they are telling are more important than the negative impact it might have on their lives. As you read "The Help" you can't help but notice the symbolism dripping from nearly every page. One of the main issues with the story was that the use of the bathroom used by a black person was unhealthy for white people. It was a fact in the book that you could get a disease if you did that. It really symbolizes what was wrong with the white community of Mississippi in the 1960s. A man was beaten for accidentally using a white toilet. Little Mae Mobley gets spanked for using Aibeleen's bathroom. One of Hilly Holbrook's most important projects is to pass a law requiring white families to build bathrooms for their black helpers to use. At a certain point in the story Skeeter finally realizes that what is happening is wrong. She grew up with these women but realizes she knows them. After reading about Jim Crow laws in the library, he begins to understand. “But then I realize, like a shell opening in my head, that there is no difference between those government laws and Hilly building Aibileen a bathroom in the garage, except ten signature mines in the state capitol.” (Stockett 203) The author uses the bathroom problem to symbolize the large measure t...... in the center of the card ...... with the three of them? Minny thinks, “I don't care much about the vote. I'm not interested in eating at the counter with white people. What I care about is, if in ten years, a white lady will say my girls are dirty and accuse them of stealing silver. (Stockett 256) This is such a powerful thought on Minny's part. She is tired of white people looking down on her and ultimately wants change not for herself, but for her children. Minny knew that what they were doing was for the greater good. “The Help” by Kathryn Stockett is a story that takes you through the ups and downs of life in Jackson, Mississippi, in the 1960s. With the courage of these 3 brave women they were able to write and publish a book about helping. The help. Although there were ultimately little repercussions, Jackson, Mississippi saw a change for the better after the book's release.
