This commandment was not related to a physical object, it was about human relationships. The commandment should be “Thou shalt not steal man or woman,” “Thou shalt not steal any man from thy neighbor.” The main focus of this commandment prohibits the kidnapping of the free Israelite. This values human freedom; Man's right to freedom was sacred in Israel, and its protection was ordained by the Lord Himself. The eighth commandment “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor” simply says that you cannot lie to another man, especially if called to testify for another Israelite. The defendants' sentence was based on two witness testimonies and therefore was very important and formed the basis of their legal system. This serves under the value of justice for an Israelite's reputation and autonomy. The ninth and tenth commandments were combined because they both recognize property rights. “Do not lust after your neighbor's wife, do not concern yourself with his house, his field, his servant, man or woman, his ox, his donkey, or anything that is his.” During this biblical period, the wife was considered the husband's property, so to understand this commandment one must understand that it was a cultural norm.
